Surrender value in life insurance, explained.

In short

Surrender value is the amount an insurer pays if you end a life insurance policy before it matures. It is usually lower than the total premiums you paid in the early years, and it depends on the policy type, how long you paid and the insurer. Always get the figure in writing before you decide.

What is surrender value?

When you stop a savings or investment linked life insurance policy and ask the insurer to close it, the money you receive is the surrender value. Pure term insurance usually has no surrender value because it is protection only.

What are guaranteed and special surrender value?

Guaranteed surrender value is a minimum amount set by the plan and the regulator rules. Special surrender value is calculated by the insurer from the benefits still to come. Insurers generally pay the higher of the two. The exact formula and any waiting period are in your policy document and in IRDAI rules, so check them for your plan.

Why is the amount often low in early years?

Part of your early premiums goes to cover the cost of the insurance, commissions and charges. That is why exiting in the first few years can return less than you paid. Holding the policy longer can change the picture, but that depends on the plan.

What should I check before surrendering?

  • The surrender value quoted in writing by the insurer.
  • What you would lose: life cover, bonuses or guaranteed additions still to come.
  • Other options such as making the policy paid up, or taking a policy loan where it is offered.
  • Tax treatment of the proceeds, which depends on the policy and your situation. Ask a tax professional.
  • Whether you still need life cover after surrendering.

Can I compare surrender value and keeping the policy?

Yes. The right choice depends on your cover needs, the policy returns to date and the cost of staying in. A licensed advisor can walk through your numbers. AdviceSahi shows what each policy is worth today so you can start with facts.
